Topological phase transitions by periodic modulation of transport properties on carbon based materials

In this talk we show results on the effects that periodic driving fields have on the transport properties of carbon based materials, with particular focus on the low energy spectrum of graphene. Although in the static regime the system remains in a trivial topological phase (vanishing Chern number) it is shown that the periodically driven field induces a topological phase transition. We compare our scenario to other recent proposals for such a so called Floquet topological insulator.
