The symmetry group of asymptotically fat 3d spacetimes at null infinity is shown to be the Bondi-Metzner Sachs group in 3 dimensions. More precisely, it is the semi- direct product of the diffeomorphism group on the circle with its adjoint representation. The associated Lie algebra is the same infinite-dimensional extension of alt1 that has appeared in statistical physics. We will explore some of the consequences of this result for 3d flat gravity and its dual description in terms of a contraction of 2d Liouville theory.
